Great illustration goes a long way

Last week, I launched a new site for a friend of mine, Simon Elsbury. Simon is a leading Lighting Cameraman in London, and has worked with all of the big names in TV, from BBC, ITV and Channel 4 – to Sky, Virgin and BT. His client list is really very impressive.

Anyway, I digress, my point is, that we decided (after much discussion) to look into an illustrative style to show Simon to the world. I worked alongside a very talented cartoonist to create the various poses we needed of Simon, and the final product is very striking.

The thing with great illustration on a website, is that it can be so personable. Pictures of people are nice – but an illustration can tell an extra story and really highlight certain features or traits. One for example is used on the About me page of Simon’s website – it is a nice, full body shot of him working a camera on a tripod – to get that same image as a photograph, and to have it cut out to sit on a blank background, would have been very difficult, due to the intricacies of the camera and tripod. But the illustration does it perfectly, as well as making the page feel warm and friendly.
